Friday and Saturday we competed in the Messiah Petrofes Invitational. The weekend was filled with highs and lows. We bounced between 1st and 4th place throughout the tournament, but did not finish strong and ended 4th out of 12 teams. Riki Reynolds won the tournament with a 40 second fall in the finals. He is Mount Union's first champion at this tournament since Rocky Laughlin and Chad Hilliard both won titles in 2004. On Tuesday we return to my alma matter and wrestle John Carroll.
We won last night over Muskingum last night 47-0. It was pretty exciting because this was the first time I've been on the winning end of a shutout since I've been at Mount Union. Some highlights were Erik Canter and John Piechuta both fighting hard to pull off the only close wins of the night. We are leaving for Pennsylvania tomorrow and wrestling Friday and Saturday at the Petrofes Invitational at Messiah College. We were 6th a year ago but will be in the hunt for the team title this year. Check out the Highlights ...
We went 2-2 at the Buckeye Duals. We started out the day with a 22-23 loss to #22 Lycoming then a 27-9 loss to #18 Wilkes. We then bounced back with solid wins over King's (32-9) and Mount St. Joseph (34-12). This was a real wake up call for the team. I think we finally see that we can compete at a high level. The Lycoming match was within reach and although we only won 2 against Wilkes, we saw that there is not much difference between a top 20 team and us. Josh Malave had a great day finishing 4-0. This weekend we will be traveling to Ohio State to compete at the Buckeye Duals. We will have four matches against Lycoming, Wilkes, Kings, and Mount St. Joes. I feel this will be a great test for us as Lycoming and Wilkes are both top 25 teams. I just hope we eat our Wheaties for breakfast.
We won our first dual last night against Thiel by a score of 22-14 to start the year out 1-0. I don't think we looked sharp, but we still pulled off the win. They won this dual the past two years, so it was nice to get my first win over Thiel. Press Release We have 4 big duals on Sunday at the Buckeye Duals at Ohio State. We wrestle 2 nationally ranked teams (Lycoming and Wilkes) and 2 other tough teams (Kings and Mt St Joseph).
We started the season out Saturday at the Ashland Open. It's hard to see how much we improved using opens because the competition at these tournaments change so much each year. However, after having one placewinner last year and 11 this year, it is probably safe to say we have made some progress. -Josh Malave finished 2nd at 141 -Riki Reynolds finished 3rd at 125 -Andy Jenkins (184) and Derick Hesson (285) finished 4th -Erik Canter (133) and Jeff Liggitt (157) finished 5th -Jeremy Regula (149), Lambert McEl...
