The Purple Raiders went 4-0 on Saturday defeating King's, Lycoming, Wilkes, and Thiel. Four individuals finished the day undefeated (Josh Malave, 4-0 at 141; Bill Schindel, 4-0 at 197; Kevin Shadrach, 2-0 at 149; and Jeremy Hathaway, 2-0 174) but it was an all around effort that led the team finishing 4-0 on the day. We hosted our third annual Halloween workout. The guys worked hard and had lots of fun. Now it's all business as we get ready for our competitive season to begin. Bill Schindel became an All-American for the second year in a row. Bill won 3 matches and lost 2 to finish in 7th place. He was 8th a year ago, competing at 197 both years. With one more year of eligibility remaining, I am hoping Schindel will put in the extra effort this off season to make a run at a national title. Freshman Riki Reynolds (125) and Senior Richie Clark (149) both drew rattails and finished 0-2. The pairings were not in our favor, as Mount Union wrestled in 2 of the 6 rattails. Reynolds drew th...
The Mount Union Wrestling team finished second at the Ohio Athletic Conference Tournament for the second year in a row. We were 11.5 points from the team title. Riki Reynolds (125), Richie Clark (149), and Bill Schindel (197) all won titles and have qualified for the NCAA Division III National Tournament March 5-6 in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Schindel will be looking to improve upon his 8th place finish last year and Reynolds and Clark will be looking to earn their first All-American honors in their first trip to nationals. H...
The Purple Raiders have won three straight dual meets. With a 29-12 win over Niagara Community College, a 44-6 win over Case Western Reserve, and a 38-6 win over Baldwin Wallace, we hope to keep the victories coming as we peak for OACs. Our biggest challenge of the year is Friday and Saturday, when we compete at the Wheaton Pete Willson Invitational in Illinois. If we wrestle like we are capable, we should improve on our 19th place finish from last year and break into the top ten.
We suffered a 23-13 loss to 23rd ranked Heidelberg. We underperformed and were out wrestled, but in the loss I saw something good. I could see that we finally have the ability to win an OAC title. We have the tools, but need to refocus our heads, fine tune our technique, and improve our conditioning to beat Heidelberg when it counts. We will grow from this experience and be a different team next month. We host Niagara County Community College on Saturday at 7:30 and the Purple Raider Open Sunday at Allian...
The Purple Raiders have returned from our trip to Florida as the Citrus Open Team Champions. We are currently ranked 28th nationally and finished ahead of 29th ranked Rhode Island and 30th ranked Oneonta. We now have a week of solid training before we take on the defending OAC Champions Heidelberg next Tuesday at home. 2009 Citrus Open Highlights -Team Champions (My first team title since being at Mount Union) -4 Individual Champions (Malave, Manypenny, and Hesson each won a college tournament for the first t...
We won our second straight against JCU last night. 31-13 was the final. We started off right with a win at 125 and never looked back. Last year was close, but this year we proved we are clearly the better team with a convincing win. Check out all the matches under the Coverage section. We now have 3 weeks off until our next competition. We wrestle at the Florida Citrus Invitational on December 29. We will use this time to get in some intensive training and get ready to bring home our first team tournament tit...
Friday and Saturday we competed in the Messiah Petrofes Invitational. The weekend was filled with highs and lows. We bounced between 1st and 4th place throughout the tournament, but did not finish strong and ended 4th out of 12 teams. Riki Reynolds won the tournament with a 40 second fall in the finals. He is Mount Union's first champion at this tournament since Rocky Laughlin and Chad Hilliard both won titles in 2004. On Tuesday we return to my alma matter and wrestle John Carroll.
